This course introduces charcoal as a pressure-free and versatile medium for abstract landscape interpretation. Through guided mark-making exercises and tonal exploration, you will learn how to translate the essence of land and atmosphere into bold, expressive imagery. Working through a series of landscapes with a consistent theme and perspective, you will expand your technical skills while exploring different compositions, contrasts, and focal points in each artwork. Using charcoal and a variety of drawing tools, you will create mesmerising landscape drawings of distant mountains, misty fields, and mysterious terrains that capture mood, movement, and atmosphere rather than fine detail. By the end of the course, you will have developed greater confidence in using charcoal to create expressive, evocative landscapes that reflect your own artistic interpretation.Materials cost approximately $80 and will need to be purchased beforehand and brought along to the class.

Your Tutor is Victoria Lowery

Victoria Lowery MA VisArt, GradDipEdSec has been teaching at WEA since April 2011.

Victoria is passionate about the creative process, and has been drawing, painting, working with textiles and designing from an early age, influenced by her father who was an artist and graphic designer. 

Victoria emigrated from Ukraine as an established artist and graduate of L’viv National Academy of Arts, and came to South Australia in 2011 after living and exhibiting her artwork in Austin, Texas in the United States for two years. 

While teaching at the WEA, Victoria completed a Master’s Degree in Visual Art and Design and Illustration and later, a Diploma in Secondary Education at UniSA. 

Victoria teaches a range of WEA art and craft courses including acrylic and watercolour painting, drawing, textiles and fibre design.
