Fun with Floral Art

Course Description

Fun with Floral Art is a relaxed, beginner-friendly course designed for anyone curious about working with flowers, regardless of prior experience.

Over the course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of floral art, learning how to select, prepare and care for cut flowers while exploring creativity in a supportive and enjoyable environment.

The focus is on learning at your own pace, building confidence, and discovering the joy of working with seasonal floral materials.

Each week introduces a new style of floral arrangement, progressing from simple designs to more expressive compositions.

Students are guided through essential principles such as colour, texture, balance and form, while developing hands-on skills in manipulating floral materials and using basic mechanics.

This course is ideal for those seeking a creative outlet, a calming hobby, or a foundation for further floral studies.

Course Structure

This hands-on course progresses step by step, with each session focusing on a different type of floral arrangement.

The tutor demonstrates the featured design and explains the techniques, principles and materials involved.

Students then interpret the design and create their own arrangement using the flowers and materials they have brought along.

Throughout the course, there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions, experiment creatively, and receive guidance.

Detailed course notes are provided, and optional practice activities are suggested for those who wish to continue developing their skills between sessions.

Weekly themes include creating a floral envelope, wreath, hand-tied bouquet, turning a supermarket flower arrangement into something more elaborate, and a decorative floral frame.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Select and care for cut flowers to extend their life
  • Apply basic health and safety practices in a floral workspace
  • Understand the principles and elements of floral design
  • Use colour and texture effectively in floral arrangements
  • Apply basic techniques for manipulating floral materials
  • Choose appropriate containers, tools and mechanics
  • Create a range of different floral arrangement styles
  • Interpret a design and work creatively with seasonal materials.

Course Requirements

We will be making a different arrangement each week, for the duration of the course.

A handout will be given out at the first class, and we will also discuss what to bring from week 2 onwards.

A starter kit will be available for purchase from the tutor at the first lesson. This will include florist scissors, florist wire, parafilm tape, foliage stripper, twine, oasis foam, gift box, etc.

The cost of the starter kit is $30, and the materials can be used each week. Floristry equipment is specialist and can be difficult to source so a kit is helpful, however you are welcome to source these items yourself if you prefer.

Florist supplies can be bought from stores such as Neds, Spotlight, Baldocks in the city, or Apack upstairs at Tony’s Flowers in Mile End. As Apakc is a wholesaler you will need to say that you are a student.

In week 1 the tutor will supply the envelopes, and in addition to the above you will need to bring:

  • Bucket of water or vase for transporting flowers
  • Apron (optional)
  • Notebook and pen (optional)
  • Camera or phone for taking photos
  • Foliage: a few stems of small leaved, strong stemmed, greenery. For example:
    • Ferns
    • Ivy
    • Parsley
    • Box
    • Pittosporum
    • Lillypilly
  • Flowers: 3 to 4 stems of larger flowers, and 3 to 4 stems of small headed filler flowers. For example:
    • Leucadendrons
    • Roses
    • Spray Rosebuds
    • Spray Carnations
    • Berries
    • Button Chrysanthemums
    • Wax flowers
    • Gypsophila
    • Queen Anne’s Lace
    • Smaller succulents
    • Lisianthus
    • Alstroemerias

Flowers can be sourced from gardens, markets including the Central Market, supermarkets, florists or wholesalers such as Tony’s. Aldi stores usually have a small but well priced range.
